Ganja and Nation building ( An excerpt)

The word ‘Cannabis’ has European roots, being traced as far back as Greece and in more recent time to Dutch roots, with the translation meaning canvas. It would later take on different names to intentionally shift how the plant was seen in the New World.  But before cannabis became a ‘drug’, the plant was recognized for its medicinal, sacramental and nation building capacity throughout the indigenous world. In its most native form, the plant is Ganja, which finds its roots in India, being named after the river Ganges. It is also referred to as ‘Marihuana’ (A Mexican Spanish term co-opted by America and miscommunicated on purpose as a strong mix of herbs that had negative effects on people.

The plant became illegal in 1948 under the direction of the United States, to intentionally curb any socio-economic possibilities or advances being made without its exclusive control and taxation. The propaganda machine turned this plant into a drug even though they themselves were using cannabis  as a war material, during World War II, for making ropes and air force parachute chords. Even the US Declaration of Independence was written on paper made from the plant.

  • Head of the FBI, Anslinger instigated a nationwide campaign against cannabis, declaring that marijuana causes temporary insanity. He produced films and advertisements that featured young people smoking cannabis, committing crimes, and killing themselves or others. This is exemplified in the infamous propaganda film, Reefer Madness. The U.S. government officials were very clear on who the campaign was aimed against. “Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men,” remarks Anslinger. “The primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.” He also offered a charming portrait of the average cannabis consumer, to his knowledge. “Most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.”
